No One Will Save You From September 2023 Movies September 21, 2023

I always loved fall cause it meant the start of the new school year

where I might find that new special friend or possibly a girl friend.
It also meant the start of the new fall TV season.
It is always exciting for a movie and tv fanboy to see what is coming our way to the small or big screen.

So here is a list of what creative and corporate, truly independent and commercial
filmmakers, actors and others have produced that is coming out
while the hollywood actors and writers strike is still going on.

This is meant as a reference guide to what is out there, not an endorsement of everything that is on this list
and not a list of everything that is out there coming out.

I showed Kristin (the other half of The Catholic Bard) trailers of the films and TV shows that are coming soon or have come out
in the month of September that I have chosen for this list. My opinion not always shown may be different then hers.

August Leftovers

Wednesday, Aug. 23

Kristin: How many Star Wars movies/shows are they seriously going to keep making. I have nothing against Star Wars and have enjoyed some of their movies over the years, especially the one with the Ewoks, however don’t you think enough is enough. Do you not agree that so many movies and shows are a bit of overkill. Will people ever get tired of so many Star Wars series?

Mark: I still haven’t watched The Mandalorian season 3 yet. Or some other Disney + shows. I have the service but don’t watch it. I also haven’t cancelled it yet either. I do want to see this despite some of the less than favorable reviews.

Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope May 25, 1977

Ahsoka Tano was introduced as the 14-year-old Togruta Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker in the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)

Kristin: This show appears very apocalyptic to me. I would find those parts of the show annoying even if the characters were interesting with intriguing things to say and do.

Mark: It looks interesting enough to watch the first season first. It also looks like another Aliens invading Earth story that has been done several times over. Of course each time this tale is told it is always told with different flare and taste and hopefully a different creative take on the genere.

Wednesday, Aug. 30

Kristin: Definitely not for me. It reminds me of 1980’s cartoons. It especially reminds me of Scooby-Doo and his gang. Perhaps that it is because of the animation style and the apparently 1-dimentsional characters that are portrayed. I am not sure who this show is meant for when it comes to a target audience but I’m pretty sure I’m not part of that target audience.

Mark: I have never seen an Archer episode. It looks witty but not sure I would watch it.

Thursday, Aug. 31

Kristin: Silly and annoying had a baby and they named it the violent pirate. Enough said.

Mark: It looks a lot of fun and I had a smile on my face while watching it.

One Piece (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese manga. July 22, 1997 – present

Thursday, Aug. 31

Kristin: I don’t know why my husband has chosen annoying shows for me to analyzie tonight. In this show there is sillyness and creativity but with a large splash of violence that can probably said of most of the shows he has presented me with tonight.

Mark: I’ve always heard good things about Adventure Time. It looks fun and creative.

September 2023 Offerings

Friday, Sept. 1

Kristin: No Thank You, It looks way too violent while it appears to be thought provoking. The trailer looks very broken up so you cannot really what the plot is actually about.

Mark: I saw episode 1 of the first season. It wasn’t bad, but it also didn’t interest me enough to keep watching.

Book 1.-The Eye of the World (1990) Robert Jordan USA flag (1948 – 2007)

The Equalizer 3    YouTube
starring Denzel Washington

Kristin: No desire to watch it. Way too violent. I did see interracial cultural stuff going on and that is nice but beyond that way way too violent.

Mark: I agree with Kris. But it looks cool and stylish. But I’ve never seen the other films and some of the original TV show.

The Equalizer TV series starring Edward Woodward ran on CBS from September 18, 1985 to August 24, 1989.
The Equalizer TV series starring Queen Latifah  ran on CBS from February 7, 2021 –present

Kristin: Too violent, too sexual, too much inappropriate swearing/bad language. I don’t know who this movie is meant for. Actually I have no idea who would even enjoy this. I guess it is meant to be a comedy but as you can see from my above comments I don’t find it remotely funny or enjoyable.

Mark: I think Kristin summed up my feelings on this film pretty well.

Emma Seligman’s First Feature Film Shiva Baby (2020)

Monday, Sept. 4

Kristin: It just does not look like my style of entertainment.  I have seen some of the older episodes but never have gone back to watch it on a regular basis. It just does not appeal to me, though I cannot put my finger on just why.

Mark: It’s somewhat funny, but not enough to make me watch it on any regular basis.

Kristin: I do not plan on going out of my way to watch this group of shorts. It looks like something that may appeal to a younger audience. But is not interesting enough for me. It may not be bad. Just not my cup of tea.

Mark: I still haven’t watched Guardians 3  or Groot season 1 yet. But this looks fun and charming. Especially if your a Marvel or Guardians fan. Which I am and Kristin is not.

I Am Groot premiered its first season with five shorts on Disney+ on August 10, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.

Groot first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 (November 1960), and was created by Stan LeeLarry Lieber and Jack Kirby. Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in Annihilation: Conquest #6 (April 2008).

Kristin: Try having a seizure and following the trailer at the same time and see how well you enjoy the show.

Mark: I did enjoy the first film and pershaps some of the other ones. Good to know the Kung Fu Panda still lives to fight another day.

Kristin: Incredibly extremely uninterested. It reminds me of the Saturday Morning cartoons that were so unsuccessful they did not last. I don’t really know what their target audience is. I just know it is not me. I also just don’t like Star Trek anyway.

Mark: I am a Star Trek fan and I haven’t seen any of the new animated shows. I did like Strange New Worlds season 1 and I still haven’t finished Picard season 3.

Kristin: This movie looks very intriguing, i just wish my ability to read quickly was as good as it ought to be. That would make the show easier to follow and I would not have to stare at the letters instead of looking at the faces, demeanor, and background which would add to the comprehension of the story on a deeper level.  I would be interested in watching this. But may lose some of the plot points because the words are my main focus.

Mark:

Kristin: It is my personal belief that one should not drop a bomb for the sake of killing two large animals on civilian’s homes and cities. There must be a better way of getting these animals out of the way before they hurt others. Perhaps these animals who can not help there size could be gentle giants. I do not understand why these tween age kids are in the fight while tanks meant or army fighting are involved as it is not safe to send young people into a war like area. The fact that another language blocks the vernacular subtitles makes the storyline more difficult to follow.

Mark: This folks is why I ask my wife to watch and give her take on things. Nothing I say can come close to the golden commentary that she gives. If you like Japanese monster movies and anime, this series is for you.

The Nun IIYouTube

Kristin: The story seems a little confusing according to this trailer. It looks scary. Their outfits are quent on the little girls which is a plus if you like quant outfits. Did they all get older when they were wearing their dresses?. Wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.

Mark: I think I slightly enjoyed the first one. Do I remember it? This one looks like it captures the 70’s well. It looks mildly amusing.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3   YouTube

Kristin: It looks really funny. I would want to watch number 2 first. I like movies that take place in a different country and focus on old school traditional things. This is what this looks like. I wonder if their overdoing it a bit though cause it is 2023. I like going to the Greek church to see what it is like. I like learning about  about other cultures. I do like Irish stuff, as I’m Irish.

Mark: It has a certain kind of charm and appeal. I have meaning to go to the library to rent the first 2 movies and the limited series before heading to the theater to see this. Although it looks like will be watching this at home.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe  YouTube

Kristin: I’m assuming their gay, but I’m not criticizing them as human beings. I’m trying to figure out the story line. Are they old time philosophers with their names? Aristotle did a lot of philosophizing. Who was Dante? Were they in the same era? Is it an independent film?  I didn’t notice any unique people I recognize who have been in other things. I’d see it though.

Mark: It looks like a well done coming of age drama

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz (2012)

 66% The Changeling: Season 1 (2023) Apple TV+   YouTube

Kristin: It looks intriguing and has an other world scariness about it. I would like to watch this series if it is as it is portrayed in this trailer. It really looks like it could suck you into the story and you wouldn’t be even be paying attention to what is around you because the story would be so gripping, but in a good way.

Mark: This looks like the next series I will put and and watch with Kristin sometime soon. Lately I come home from work and we play computer Scrabble. Words with Friends 2 doesn’t always connect and you have to watch too many ads. But Scrabble Go connects and doesn’t have annoying ads. Well, anyway I’ll put on this show soon. It looks good.

The Changeling (2017) by Victor LaValle.

Sunday, Sept. 10

Kristin: It looks like the Sound of Music meets Hell. I have no intention of watching this obviously made up show in part because it is so unnecessarily violent. I do watch violent programs when they are based on a reality that was truly suffered by other human beings. After all if we do not remember the past we are condemned to repeat it.

Mark: I watched season 1 of Walking Dead way back when. I never kept up with it. The show is still pretty intense and if I had kept up with it, I’d probably go out of my way to watch it.

Kristin: That trailer looked very interesting. And if it were a all in one movie I would consider watching it. I like killer whales and the ocean. The show had both nature at its best and worst. I would have to watch the show longer before making a deeper opinion.

Mark: A CW great show like The Flash or lame like Bat Woman?

Wednesday, Sept. 13

Kristin: This show appears to be both sci-fi and mystery with a bit of horror mixed in. Incredibly interesting. I would really like this style of movie or show and hope to watch it sometime. Preferably soon.

Kristin: I have not watched any How to Train Your Dragon movies or shows. I am not interested in this story. I’m not sure why. It looks like underneath it is really a tween romance story with dragons to distract or add to a wider audience.

Kristin-It does look very intriguing. Looks like a horror type movie. It looks like it would have you on the edge of your seat. Are their really ghosts? Are they really human murderers? Is it all fake all the time? Are they all practicing for a show at the local theater? I would see it.
Mark: I haven’t seen any of the other recent Hercule Poirot movies, but would be willing to. This one birngs in the supernatural to a Agatha Christi mystery. WIll the 2 mix well?
Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot first appeared in The Mysterious Affair at Styles (published in 1920) and exited in Curtain (published in 1975). All together he appeared in 33 novels, two plays (Black Coffee and Alibi), and 51 short stories published between 1920 and 1975.
Other movies with Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot,
Sean also directed Max Winslow and the House of Secrets (2020)

Kristin: It looks very interesting and very good and I would like to see it. I like history. I like Judeo Christian history. It would probably be right up my alley. It looks very informative. I can’t tell if it is a documentary or not. It would be a yes in my book.

Mark: I thought this might be some fundamentalist Kirk Cameron type of film, but instead it looks like a very engaging film that brings you to the holy land without ever having to leave your house. I didn’t know there was a main highway connecting all these biblical places. This would be interesting and educational to watch.

Friday, Sept. 22

Kristin: No thank You. Way way way too violent. You can not tell who the main characters are by watching this trailer. But as I just mentioned the violence is way too overwhelming and I am not the least bit in watching this. I don’t even know if it is a movie or a tv show.

Mark: I’ve never seen a John Wick film cause it just looks like a violent video game come to life. This show looks stylish and creative and again glorifies violence too much.

Sep 22, 2023

Mark: Nothing I say could even come close to being as worth reading compared to Kristin’s above comments. Her mini trailer review is the reason I had her watch all these trailers.

 – – Spy Kids: Armageddon (2023) Netflix [movie]  YouTube

Kristin: It does look rather silly, a good comedy. However I see the violence as well. Maybe I am weary of violence and made up stories. So fun mixes with death and gore. I guess it’s a kids movie, after all the kids are cute and thoughtful, but must endure the violence while becoming super hero spies. I do not believe I have ever seen another Spy Kids movie.

Mark: Way back when I really enjoyed the first Spy Kids movie. Perhaps I would enjoy this one?

Kristin: I have no bloody clue what the heck this movie is really about. Does the whole movie revolve around 1 woman who looks quite young and a monster that looks like a tree. A scary tree?

Mark: This is the film that inspired the punny title of this particular blog post. It looks fascinating, scary and mysterious enough to check out.

Sunday, Sept. 24

Kristin: It looks like Saturday Morning Cartoons 1980 something meets a violent death. I have no desire to watch this show. While I do find Greek history interesting, this show sort of beats it to death until it is buried beneath the lame saturday morning cartoons and will be forgotten by those who watch it.

Mark: It might be funny enough to at least watch the fist episode. Perhaps a little too crude maybe.

Sept. 24

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar  YouTube

Kristin: The video did not give enough backround for me to completely comprehend what the larger story around this movie is truly about. We have some details but it is if we have details that live without a plot. And so therefore I do not know if I would be interested in watching the movie because it is not completely a surprise to me nor am I given enough clues to know the main characters and the true plot.

After seeing a real trailer about it she said this…

I’m still not really sure what the plot is other than a rich guy who may or may not be talking about himself, perhaps he is talking about someone with Paper Mache over his face.  Or perhaps he is making it up and sells books about the experiences of the man who can see so well.

Mark: Another Wes Anderson Roald Dahl movie. With Benedict Cumberbatch. I think that makes it worth going out of your way for. I’m not a big Wes Anderson fan by the way. The trailer just looks good.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More (1977) is a collection of seven short stories written by Roald Dahl.

Wednesday, Sept. 27

Kristin: I didn’t know survivor was still on. Gosh. It’s been on since 2001 maybe? I don’t know much about the Amazing Race and nothing about the Masked Singer. I used to watch Hells Kitchen and it took place in the U.K. I thought Lego was a one off show and didn’t know it had more than one season.

Mark: The writers strike leaves the networks with many of their beloved reality type shows left on the schedule. Shows that have been ar0und for quite some time.

 – – LEGO Masters: Season 4 (2023) 9 p.m., Fox  YouTube

Kristin:I think the story is about high school sweethearts who marry. The man becomes a violent alcoholic. It is a based on a true story which I always find intriguing. I do not like the violent bits, but would be willing to sit through this movie. The trailer seems well made but does not seem to give away the full story.

Mark: The film looks like a good Christian biopic drama with heart, soul and perhaps some humor and ducks.

Duck Dynasty  March 21, 2012 –March 29, 2017

 – – Gen V: Season 1 (2023) Prime Video   YouTube

Kristin: Sports movie meets stereotypical college kid movie meets extreme violence. No Thank You.

Ruby and the Well: Season 3, BYUtv

Kristin: I am looking forward in watching RATW. I am enjoying the show very much. It’s quent. It’s multi cultural . Although the family itself is Irish descent. It is a family friendly show. A bit of magic and a coming of age for the Teens.

Mark: Probably one of the best produced shows appearing on any streaming platforms. A show that does not dumb or talk down to tweens and although it appears to be geared towards them it is really geared to the whole family. It manages to be engaging and never goes over the edge with inappropriate material and is never the less not boring or stale. The magical realism brings Irish myths alive. The editing, camera work and acting are excellent for an independent show produced on a TV station run by mormons. The show stays religious free so any person of good will and different beliefs can enjoy the stories.  It follows in the footsteps of Highway to Heaven, Touched by an Angel and Early Edition in terms of it’s overall storytelling methods.  Highly recommended.
