Engaging With Religion In The Age Of Social Media

With the dawn of the Internet, teens everywhere have embraced Social Media. Religion in the Age of Social Media offers them the “best of both worlds.” They can be on their computers and contact all their friends simultaneously. They can post videos (TikTok, YouTube) or other platforms and share their lives. This can make it easier than ever to engage with religion in the Age of Social Media.

Coming out of the pandemic, many of our youth have been missing the interaction of their friends. This was how they stayed in touch when they couldn’t meet in person at the shopping mall or their other favorite hangouts. They’ve replaced this time by utilizing Social Media. Another area where Social Media has taken over is their religious upbringing.

With more and more churches taking advantage of Social Media, more churches have church “online.” This means our youth check-in and participate in religious instruction on their Social Media accounts. Many of these youth are also helping their parents connect with online religious instructions.

With so many churches having online services, the evolving landscape of religious engagement continues to expand. Social Media reaches farther than the local church down the block. They can now share more sermons, teachings, and content with a broader audience without worrying about geographical barriers.

Real-Time Engagement

Live streaming events of religious services and get-togethers allow users to “come as you are” and join in regardless of how they may be dressed. With so many platforms to choose from, users can choose their preference between Facebook Live, YouTube Live, and even Zoom. This allows for more interactions and more users being able to participate.

Real-Time Engagement also allows for more community building. Engaging with religion in the Social Media age also helps improve the community. Youth can join in with various groups and participate at their own pace. They can interact with one another and the leadership or watch and listen quietly without interaction. They’re not put on the spot, so they can begin participating when they feel comfortable.

Social media is here to stay. The youth of today are intricately intertwined with one another on Social media. They see something that resonates with them and hit the share button. Within minutes, hundreds, if not thousands, of people have seen the post, video, or meme.

That being said, many churches recognize this ad as a means to expand their reach. They are interacting with the youth of today in the hopes of a better tomorrow. Focusing on the many benefits of reaching the masses, they are striving to make an impact.

On-Demand Church

Another bonus to being on a Social Media platform that many churches have recognized is that they can also use a program like “on demand” for their services. This allows viewers to enjoy services at their leisure. When they have the time to sit down and enjoy the service, they can then post thoughts and comments and have some thought-provoking conversations.

Social Media facilitates not only interfaith dialogue but also understanding. People from all faiths can interact with the service. It allows people to explore other religious services from the safety of their homes. They don’t have to interact if they don’t want to; by contrast, they can also do that if they choose to interact and become more involved.

Of course, there must be a few pitfalls along with Social Media’s convenience. Challenges and controversies often lead to misinformation and misinterpretations, spawning some diverse discussions. Such discussions can rapidly lead to even more misunderstandings if not closely monitored.

Such controversies can lead to some questioning their faith or exploring other spiritual paths. It’s important to understand that youth are far more likely to access religious content and teachings through digital platforms as opposed to traditional means. Social media can also hold religious leaders and instructors to higher standards as more people are going to be viewing the content than a brick-and-mortar facility will reach.

Take Away

Social media can have both a positive and a negative impact on religious instruction. The advent of Social media can reach far more than a simple brick-and-mortar facility. However, it also opens up the possibility of more misinformation and misunderstandings.

As technology continues to evolve, so will the advancement of religious instruction on Social Media. Traditional brick-and-mortar institutions will seamlessly coexist with communities. People from around the world will come together in these congregations.

People from all walks of life will be able to access religious instruction and dialogue. Social Media algorithms will become adept at anticipating users’ interests and preferences and help link users to congregations perfectly tailored to their unique spiritual journeys. The potential for online baptisms and sacrament ceremonies will continue to expand as the demand for such services increases. This will mark a dynamic interaction of technology and community with religious institutions.
