International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21st each year. It is a global event that brings people together to embrace the practice of yoga. This day is significant because it promotes unity, peace, and harmony among individuals of different cultures and faiths. While yoga has its roots in ancient Indian traditions, its practice has spread worldwide. It attracts people from all walks of life, including Christians.

In this guide, we will explore the origins and significance of International Yoga Day and the benefits of yoga for Christians. We will also address some concerns and misconceptions Christians have about incorporating yoga into their lives.

Understanding the Origins and Significance of International Yoga Day

International Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. The proposal received overwhelming support and was unanimously adopted by the UN, designating June 21st as International Yoga Day. This date holds special significance as the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. As such, many cultures have long celebrated it as a day of spiritual significance.

The choice of June 21st may also have had political motivations, since it is the anniversary of the 1940 death of Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) party in India. The RSS was the inspiration for Modi’s own Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both are known for their Hindu nationalism and persecution of individuals practicing other faiths, most notably Christians and Muslims.

Nevertheless, International Yoga Day’s aim is to raise awareness for the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga. It is a reminder to individuals across the globe to embrace yoga’s ancient wisdom by incorporating it into their daily lives for overall well-being. The day is celebrated through various events. These include yoga sessions, workshops, and seminars, with an emphasis on promoting peace, harmony, and unity among individuals.

The Global Impact of International Yoga Day

Since its inception, International Yoga Day has had a remarkable global impact. It brings people together by transcending cultural and religious differences and fostering an environment of inclusivity and understanding.

In the original Sanskrit, yoga means union. Over the centuries, yoga has become a universal language, breaking through barriers and allowing individuals to connect with their bodies, minds, and spirits. Through practicing yoga, people from different faiths discover common ground and shared values. This promotes interfaith dialogue and mutual respect. Thus, International Yoga Day is a celebration of our shared humanity and our God-given diversity.

The Benefits of Yoga for Christians

Yoga, as a holistic practice, offers numerous benefits for Christians and individuals of all faiths. While yoga has its origins in Hinduism, it is not a religious practice in itself. Christians can adapt and practice yoga’s physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and meditation techniques to align with our beliefs and values.

One of the primary benefits of yoga is its ability to promote physical health and well-being. The practice of yoga helps to improve flexibility, strength, and balance. All of these together enhance overall physical fitness. Additionally, yoga lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular health. These physical benefits can greatly contribute to Christians’ abilities to serve others and fulfill our spiritual calling.

Furthermore, yoga offers mental and emotional benefits that can be particularly valuable to Christians. The practice of yoga helps to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and improve focus and concentration. This can assist Christians in their prayer lives, meditation, and reflections on Scripture. Yoga also promotes self-awareness and mindfulness. This enables individuals to cultivate deeper connections with their inner selves and with God.

Addressing Concerns and Misconceptions about Yoga for Christians

Despite yoga’s numerous benefits, there are concerns and misconceptions among Christians about its compatibility with their faith. Some worry that practicing yoga may involve engaging in non-Christian spiritual practices or beliefs. However, yoga is a flexible practice that is accessible to people from different cultural and faith backgrounds.

I have practiced yoga off and on for almost 20 years, and I’ve practiced it consistently for almost two years. During that time, I received some criticism and ridicule for my devotion to yoga. However, I steadfastly maintain my practice because I firmly believe it is what God wants me to do. I know He has made it possible for me to attend yoga classes in the past, whether by rearranging scheduling conflicts or arranging transportation for me.  He wouldn’t have done those things if He didn’t want me participating in yoga. And I don’t think Satan has that much control over events and circumstances.

God is omnipresent and omnipotent. Satan isn’t.

Some Concerns and Considerations in Practicing Yoga

Still, although it is acceptable and even beneficial for Christians to practice yoga, there are some concerns to address.

It is essential for Christians to approach yoga with discernment and intentionality. This means gaining awareness of the specific teachings and philosophies associated with the practice. Then, you can discern what does and doesn’t align with your faith. For example, I do not participate in the “OM” chant at the end of yoga sessions because I am uncomfortable with its invocation of the vibrations of the universe. I worship God, after all, not the universe. So, I choose to leave that part out of my personal practice, although some Christian brothers and sisters take a different perspective on the meaning of “OM.”

Because there are so many differences in what feels right to Christians practicing yoga, it is critical to find a yoga instructor who is respectful of Christian perspectives. Open communication with your instructor about your faith and intentions can ensure a balanced approach to the practice. It may even open up gospel conversations, if you remember to be respectful of your instructor’s beliefs.

Incorporating specifically Christian practices is another way to address any concerns you may have about yoga. For example, you can infuse your yoga practice with prayer, Scripture reading, and meditating on the words of Christ. By focusing on God’s presence and seeking His guidance during yoga, you can maintain a Christ-centered perspective. In this way, practicing yoga may enhance your faith journey as it has mine.

Exploring Christian-Friendly Yoga Practices and Resources

For Christians who are interested in practicing yoga, there are various Christian-friendly yoga practices and resources available. These resources incorporate Christian principles and teachings into the practice of yoga, providing a framework that aligns with Christian beliefs. Some Christian yoga practices may include Scripture readings, Christian music, and prayers integrated into the yoga session.

Additionally, there are Christian yoga instructors and studios that cater specifically to Christians seeking a faith-based approach to yoga. These instructors understand the unique needs and concerns of Christian practitioners and offer guidance and support that aligns with their faith. Online platforms and apps also provide access to Christian-friendly yoga classes and resources, allowing individuals to practice yoga in the comfort of their own homes.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Revelation Wellness RevWellTV: This site offers free online fitness classes with Scripture and devotional thoughts woven throughout. If you’re looking for just yoga, focus on the Rev on the Mat videos. Look especially for sessions led by Michele Tupen.
  • Music for Biblical Meditation: This is a YouTube playlist I use when I’m meditating on a biblical thought or Scripture passage. I also use it when I’m performing my own yoga flows, which almost always include a lot of hip openers.
  • Christians Practicing Yoga Teacher Directory: CPY is a multidenominational site that features both Christian and Christian-sensitive perspectives. This directory can help you connect with an actual instructor, either in person or online.
  • YogaFaith Free Resources:  A goldmine of affirmations, information, poses, music, and more. You’ll want to bookmark this page and return to it often because there’s too much to look at all at once. And it’s all so good!

Celebrating International Yoga Day as a Christian

As Christians, celebrating International Yoga Day can be an opportunity to embrace the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga while honoring our faith. Participating in yoga sessions or events on this day can serve as a way to connect with others, promote unity, and build bridges of understanding with people of different faiths. By engaging in yoga on International Yoga Day, Christians can highlight the inclusive nature of the practice and foster a sense of global community.

It is important, however, to approach International Yoga Day with discernment and awareness of its origins and intended purpose. Acknowledging the roots of yoga in ancient Indian traditions and the UN’s recognition of International Yoga Day can help you appreciate the cultural and global significance of this day while staying true to your Christian identity and values.

Promoting Unity and Understanding between Different Faiths through Yoga

Yoga has the power to bridge gaps and promote unity among individuals of different faiths. By practicing yoga alongside people from diverse backgrounds, Christians can engage in meaningful dialogue, cultivate empathy, and develop a deeper appreciation for the spiritual practices of others. Yoga can serve as a platform for Christians to share their faith and values, fostering understanding and respect.

In this interconnected world, it is vital for us to strive for unity and compassion. Embracing yoga on International Yoga Day can be an avenue to demonstrate our commitment to love, peace, and understanding. By participating in yoga events and engaging in interfaith dialogue, Christians can contribute to building a more harmonious and inclusive society.

Today, I celebrated the day by participating in a morning yin yoga session with a spiritual instructor who is open to most faiths and practices. We’ve been practicing yoga together for almost two years, and we’ve developed a good, trusting relationship during that time. He is respectful of me and my beliefs, and I am respectful of his.

I was even able to bless him with a homemade muffin as part of our celebration. He received the blessing of good food, and I received the blessing of his gratitude.

The spirit of unity, love, and acceptance yoga fosters in those who practice it is beautiful, healthy, and God-honoring.
