The Reawakening of Pursuit for Democracy and the Israeli Flag

The Reawakening of Pursuit for Democracy and the Israeli Flag April 13, 2023

How did a flag that had been kidnapped by extremists in Israel, return to be a symbol of democracy and hope?

I was walking down the streets of Tel-Aviv, as they were slowly filling up with Israeli flags.

White and blue colors could be seen from afar covering the city’s landscape.

My husband wearing the flag proudly on his back, others carrying it on poles.

Children sharing the flag, this very essential symbol on their caps and backpacks.

Drummers were leading songs of freedom and peace with the Israeli flag covering their instrument.

An amazing and powerful reawakening of  pursuit for democracy and the Israeli flag has filled the streets of Israel.

How did a flag that had been kidnapped by extremists in Israel, return to be a symbol of democracy and hope?

Every Sat Night You Can Hear Voices Singing for Democracy

For 15 straight weeks hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to protest.

There voices against a fanatic, racist anti-democratic government shouted across the country.

Every Sat evening,  you can here voices singing for democracy, songs of peace and cries of resistance.

From little babies to elders, people walk side by side; their pain and worry can be felt.

But mostly it is the presence of resilience and persistence

for a just democratic Israel that is heard.

I marched, I sang, I listened.

I, a peace activist from the age of 14, could feel the hope of my Israeli brothers and sisters .

The courageous and strong chanting was flowing through my veins.

An injustice that had been brewing for years, had boiled over,

and the people of Israel are trying to stop the country from burning.

That bittersweet moment when your tears stand one with the glory of hope.

The move to change a judiciary system sparked an awakening in the people of Israel.

I had  never experienced one like this  before.

This new system would give the Prime minister and government the right to make and change laws,

with no checks and balances from a supreme court.

Given that, then stripping rights from all its citizens.

This is not something the good and soulful people of Israel would stand for.

At this instant, I could sense the overflowing goodness of new possibilities and opportunities knocking at our doors.

That bittersweet moment when your tears stand one with the glory of hope.

Sometimes, it takes a moment of darkness to acknowledge the opportunities that moments of light offer.

Sometimes, it takes a moment of darkness to acknowledge the opportunities that moments of light offer.

Because, only then do we seek the various roads that will bring us there.

As I prepare for this Saturday night protest, my flag folded ready to go, I pray.

May our voices for the pursuit of a just and democratic state for all the citizens of Israel be heard.
