The message written on my heart is one of identity; I am passionate about living authentically as the person I was created to be and helping others to do likewise…even in the midst of this gauntlet that is life. I live on the east coast of Canada with my family. My teenagers are occasionally mind-boggling, and entirely magnificent. In addition to writing, I teach French to High School students…and all remaining hours are, quite literally, spent in my vehicle, driving the teenagers to hockey practices, rehearsals, horseback riding, and to visit friends. In this episode we continue our conversation with Douglas Campbell. Douglas was born in London but raised a New Zealander. He did his undergraduate degree in Political Philosophy at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and his graduate degrees in Religious Studies at the University of Toronto in Canada, where he was supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship. He wrote his thesis on Romans 3:21-26 under the direction of Richard Longenecker. His first academic post was in Religious Studies at his alma mater, the University of Otago (1989-96). After seven years he went to teach in Theology and Religious Studies at King's College London (1996-2003), and after another seven years was hired into his current teaching position at Duke Divinity School, where he is now a Professor of New Testament and directs the Prison Studies program. Since arriving at Duke in 2003 he has published four books on the apostle Paul, with a fifth, reasonably large, book due to arrive in the book shops in November 2019. Douglas has two adult children, and is a keen supporter of the arts, as his wife, Rachel , is a painter. He loves the warm weather of North Carolina, and currently lives in downtown Durham with two cats, a dog, and his wife's chickens. Despite qualms in terms of a Christian virtue ethic, he remains passionate about international politics and international rugby. Theosis And The Four Paths With Alexander John Shaia
In this episode we talk with Alexander John Shaia. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Alexander John was part of a large extended family that had emigrated from Lebanon a generation previously. He grew up immersed in the ancient traditions of Middle Eastern Christianity (Maronite Catholicism) and was expected to become a priest, a family tradition since the year 1300. He was led otherwise. Alexander John attended the University of Notre Dame and received a degree in Cultural Anthropology. Next came a brief time in seminary followed by a Master’s in Counseling Education, a Master’s in Religious Education, a graduate certificate in Pastoral Psychotherapy, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. His extensive psychological training across many modalities finally led him to Switzerland where he studied with the Jungian Analyst and founder of Sandplay Psychotherapy, Dora Maria Kalff. Alexander John became the first US man admitted to the International Society for Sandplay Therapy and continues to serve as a senior Certified Teaching Member of the organization. Returning to the United States, he undertook years of private practice, teaching, parish and retreat ministry and further study. Integrating his life-long practice of prayer with many cross-disciplines—anthropology, psychology, spirituality, and ritual work—has shaped him into a unique thought-leader and a widely sought consultant, trainer, and inspiring keynote speaker. Then in 2000, Alexander John’s professional life expanded from being primarily a speaker to also that of an author, now with some eight books and more in the works. He lives in the high Rocky Mountains in Northern New Mexico and the wild Atlantic coast of Northwest Spain. A perfect day finds him in the presence of ancient trees, massive stones, his dog and a book of poetry. I grew up in the good ole Pacific Northwest which means I like doing stuff outside—alpine climbing, sailing, surfing, skiing, cycling, et cetera. I studied religion in college (Walla Walla University), worked as a pastor while I went to seminary (Grand Canyon Theological Seminary), and now I’m a postgrad studying the intersectionality between philosophy, science, and religion (University of Edinburgh). I’m interested in lots of things, including religious pluralism, philosophy of science and religion, eschatology, diversity, and ethics, which all gravitate around the human perception of God. I wrote a book about God too, it’s called Only Love: How Everything Was, Is, and Will Be. Before that, I was a seminarian at Princeton Theological Seminary, where I worked as a farmhand at PTS’s Farminary. Don’t be deceived… When I got to the Farminary, a 21-acre experiment in sustainable agriculture that doubles as the world’s best classroom, I didn’t know anything about farming, and I had more experience killing plants than nurturing them. But my work on the farm changed me. More than anything else in my life, that land taught me about the story of life, death, and new life that God has written into creation. She found herself on a journey “from the church to the Pride parade,” falling in love with the LGBTQIA+ community. Simple acts of love and acceptance turned into a viral sensation, and Sara knew she had the opportunity to lead impactful change. From 1996 to 2000, she experienced an intense time of spiritual growth. The new insights opened the door to fresh theological perspectives in three areas of human concern: time, language, and the organization of God’s people. Believing that personal insight must be grounded in credible scholarship, Carol entered the field of biblical research as an independent researcher. Her studies culminated in the presentation of several academic papers within the Society of Biblical Literature. She has published three books to date and is planning to publish her fourth book soon. She hopes her research will help, in some small way, to reorient the focus of the collective human spirit in the areas of time, language and organization. Carol writes from a visionary perspective. We are honored to have back with us - Alexander John Shaia. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Alexander John was part of a large extended family that had emigrated from Lebanon a generation previously. He grew up immersed in the ancient traditions of Middle Eastern Christianity (Maronite Catholicism) and was expected to become a priest, a family tradition since the year 1300. He was led otherwise. Alexander John attended the University of Notre Dame and received a degree in Cultural Anthropology. Next came a brief time in seminary followed by a Master’s in Counseling Education, a Master’s in Religious Education, a graduate certificate in Pastoral Psychotherapy, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. His extensive psychological training across many modalities finally led him to Switzerland where he studied with the Jungian Analyst and founder of Sandplay Psychotherapy, Dora Maria Kalff. Alexander John became the first US man admitted to the International Society for Sandplay Therapy and continues to serve as a senior Certified Teaching Member of the organization. Returning to the United States, he undertook years of private practice, teaching, parish and retreat ministry and further study. Integrating his life-long practice of prayer with many cross-disciplines—anthropology, psychology, spirituality, and ritual work—has shaped him into a unique thought-leader and a widely sought consultant, trainer, and inspiring keynote speaker. Then in 2000, Alexander John’s professional life expanded from being primarily a speaker to also that of an author, now with some eight books and more in the works. He lives in the high Rocky Mountains in Northern New Mexico and the wild Atlantic coast of Northwest Spain. A perfect day finds him in the presence of ancient trees, massive stones, his dog and a book of poetry. In this episode we chat with James Early Here is James' bio in his own words. I am a Bible teacher, speaker, blogger, podcaster, soon-to-be author. And I am a “Jesus mindset”coach. Since October 2008 I have conducted weekly Bible studies at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, CT. I give talks and conduct workshops on the Bible covering a wide range of topics to churches and groups as well as at the prison. I grew up in Amarillo, Texas and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In high school I became dis-satisfied with some of the things I was being taught there and started going to the Christian Science church, which I have been a member of since. Currently I live in Bethel, CT with my wife, Polly Castor. We have three grown children, which we homeschooled all the way through high school. I was a full-time stay-at-home dad for 10 years when we first started our family. I love to garden and hike in my spare time. I never fit into the corporate world, but have done sales and marketing and voice-over work, which led me to want to share my message instead of someone else's. So, I started The Bible Speaks to You Podcast in the fall of 2019, to explore the here-and-nowness of the kingdom of heaven and how it impacts the way we live our daily lives. The purpose of my podcast is to get back to the original Christianity of Jesus without all the things we have added in the last 2,000 years, to rediscover our right and our ability to think, act, pray, and heal like Jesus did. I am on a journey to discover our right and ability to embrace this mindset of Jesus, to see ourselves through the lens of Christ’s love, and live our lives from the perspective of Jesus’s promise that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. I live on the east coast of Canada with my family. My teenagers are occasionally mind-boggling, and entirely magnificent. In addition to writing, I teach French to High School students…and all remaining hours are, quite literally, spent in my vehicle, driving the teenagers to hockey practices, rehearsals, horseback riding, and to visit friends. In this episode we chat with Amy Courts. Amy Courts is a singer-songwriter, musician, writer, activist, and Seminarian based in Minneapolis, MN where she lives with her husband and son. Amy grew up in Denver, CO the youngest of four preacher's daughters and, after graduating in 2003 with her B.A. in Biblical Studies, moved to Nashville, TN where she independently produced and released two albums and toured with Jennifer Knapp and Derek Webb. After a near-death childbirth experience in 2011, she and her family moved to Minneapolis where she spent the next five years as a stay-home mom, worship leader, and singer-for-hire. In 2017, after a six year hiatus from creating and performing original music, she and her husband fulfilled a decade-long dream of co-creating and -producing a collaborative album as the duo Fireworks on Ferris Wheels for which they enjoyed critical acclaim and indie radio success. Amy also performs in a number of Twin Cities based bands, including with world-renowned guitarist Billy McLaughlin as part of Simple Gifts and Young and the Rest. In the fall of 2018, Amy was offered a full-ride scholarship to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN where she is currently earning her Master of Divinity in Justice & Reconciliation while working with numerous local arts-based, humanitarian, religious, and para-church organizations to address systemic injustices against marginalized communities through musical, theological, and political activism centered on economic, environmental, healthcare, and education justice. Vearncombe is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, appointed to the Office of the Dean. She received her Ph.D. in a collaborative program at the University of Toronto between the Department for the Study of Religion and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies. A specialist in writing instruction, Erin worked for five years as a faculty member of the Princeton Writing Program at Princeton University, and is currently designing a program for the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto that will ease the transition to university-level writing for incoming undergraduate students. Her research specialty is the social origins and histories of Jesus movements in the first centuries of the common era, with a particular focus on practices of dress. Bernard Brandon Scott is the author and editor of many books, including The Real Paul: Recovering His Radical Challenge and The Trouble with Resurrection. A charter member of the Jesus Seminar, he is chair of Westar’s Christianity Seminar. He served as chair of the Bible in Ancient and Modern Media Section of the Society of Biblical Literature, as well as a member of several SBL Seminars including the Parable Seminar and Historical Jesus Seminar. He holds an A.B. from St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, an M.A. from Miami University, and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Hal Taussig recently retired as Professor of New Testament at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He lectures around the country and world. She recently completed her third full-length book, God is a Black Woman (HarperOne) , which details her 400-mile walking pilgrimage across central France in search of ancient Black Madonna statues, and examines the relationship among race, gender, and cultural perceptions of the Divine. He was a minister a district worker and church administrator for 20 years in an evangelical conservative denomination. he left church in 2005 has worked secularly since then. He left church entirely in 2008 while working through a period of deconstruction/reconstruction. He returned to church in 2018 in an Anglican church that focuses on social justice and is embracing and affirming of the LGBTQIA+ community. He is an ally for the gay community and also an ally for the indigenous community. His wife is Cherokee and is a social worker to indigenous families. He lives in Ottawa Canada. In its short history, this gospel-centered, multiethnic, intergenerational church has already established a solid foothold in the region to the glory, honor, and transformational power of Christ. It was natural that news of a major recent book by René Girard and his extraordinary cross-disciplinary understanding of Christianity should arrive among members of this group. The seed of information planted then eventually matured into contact between Tony and James Williams, professor of the Hebrew Bible in the Syracuse University Department of Religion and prominent Girardian scholar. With Williams' support and encouragement Tony was accepted for doctoral studies in the Department,emigrating to the U.S. with his family, and gaining his degree in 1999.
